Return of Application Portfolios

Students may apply to the Visual Communications BFA Program (a program of study within the Art department) only after completing one year of Foundation Art at the University of Delaware. Application into the Foundation Program of the Art Department requires a portfolio, typically made up of work created during high school. Click here to see the application process.

Application to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Visual Communications requires a portfolio made up of work created during the student's first year of Foundation Art.

What level a student is (first-year, second-year...) depends on where they are in the Visual Communications curriculum and not where they are in the university or how many credits they've completed.

We define the Visual Communications "first year" as the year our students are taking ART 202, 203, 206 and 207, (after being accepted into the BFA in Visual Communications degree.)

We also follow a strict numbering sequence of 100, 200, 300, 400 for courses which fall at the various levels. This sequence is based on the students academic standing in the University. For instance a student that might take an independent study course during the spring of their junior year would take ART 366 and during their senior year they would take ART 466.

Advising

We cannot over emphasize the importance of being an informed student. This website contains all of the information you should need to apply to the program. If you have a question that this website does not answer, then contact Ashley Pigford, Coordinator of the BFA VC degree program, or other VC faculty: Bill Deering (Photographic Design), Robyn Phillips (Illustration), Colette Gaiter (Interactive Media), David Brinley (Illustration), Tricia Treacy (Typography).

Enrollment Limits [top]

Visual Communications limits its enrollment to 45 majors.

It is important that students in the Visual Communications degree program maintain a minimum of a C grade in all their Visual Communications courses. Failure to receive a C or better will disqualify a student from continuing in the degree program.

BFA in Visual Communications vs. Fine Arts [top]

The BFA in Visual Communications and the BFA in Fine Arts require separate applications. Once accepted to the BFA in VC, students who voluntarily leave or are denied continuation in VC are not automatically granted admission to the BFA in Fine Arts.

Changing from the BFA in Visual Communications to the Bachelor of Arts may require additional semesters beyond the four years in order to complete the BA degree requirements.

Eligibility [top]

As stated in the application procedure, the number of applicants can increase the competitiveness of getting admitted to the VC program.

Students applying to the VC program must have successfully completed the 18 credit hours of Foundation course requirements at the University of Delaware, or have transfer credits approved by the chair of the department to satisfy all of the Foundation credits.

More information about the Foundation Art Program is on the UD/ART website

Portfolio Specifications [top]

Submit an portfolio of 15 to 20 pieces of original artwork which represents each of the foundation courses and any other college level art courses. Generally we think that is 3 pieces per required course and then filling out your portfolio with other work which best represents you. It is possible to include work completed outside of class, but for students just completing Foundations this work must have been produced since finishing high school.

Flat artwork should be presented in its original form as required for class. Paintings, large flat pieces over 30" x 40" or three-dimensional work must be presented as photographic prints (scaled to fit on an 8.5 inch x 11 inch piece of paper) in a plastic sleeve. Do not submit the slides. Up to three views of each three-dimensional work are permitted. All work should be clearly labeled and numbered to match the inventory listing described below.

We suggest you purchase a large cardboard portfolio envelope from the Trabant Center Campus Shop to hold the work. Rolled up drawings are acceptable, but should be submitted in a sturdy tube to prevent damage. It is important that you put your portfolio together in a way that is easily accessible yet also protects the work. Do not use excessive packaging or protective materials.

Include a numbered inventory list, typewritten, which indicludes the following information for each piece in the application portfolio.

1. the applicant's name
2. course title
3. Instructor's Name
4. short description (i.e. figure study, torn paper poster, etc.)
5. medium
6. size
